How to think about an Africa trip

North Africa (Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia) is close, cheap and easy for a short trip. East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania) is classic safari country. South Africa mixes developed cities, wine and nature.

Distances are vast and internal transport is slow. Better to pick one region and go deep than to try to cross the continent.

When to visit

Morocco and Egypt: spring and autumn are pleasant; desert summers are hard. East Africa for safari: the dry season (June–October) concentrates wildlife around water, and the great migration crosses the Serengeti July to October.

South Africa: its summer (November–March) is our winter — good weather for Cape Town.

Visas, health and money

Most African countries require a visa — some on arrival, some an e-Visa in advance. A yellow-fever vaccination requirement exists in several and is checked at the border. Malaria is common in many areas.

Cash matters more than on other continents — ATMs aren't everywhere and cards aren't always accepted outside cities.
