How to think about a South America trip

South America is a long-trip destination — the flight is expensive, distances are big, and there's a lot to see. Less than three weeks feels rushed. The classic loop: Peru (Machu Picchu), Bolivia (the salt flats), Argentina and Chile (Patagonia), Brazil.

Internal flights are long and not cheap — plan a route that makes geographic sense, not back-and-forth hops.

When to visit

Seasons are reversed. The South American summer (December–March) suits Patagonia and the south, but it's also the rainy season in the Amazon and the tropics. May–September: dry in the mountains and the Amazon, cold in Patagonia.

Book Machu Picchu tickets and the Inca Trail months ahead.

Visas, altitude and money

Most South American countries are visa-free for tourism for many nationalities. Real altitude sickness in Cusco, La Paz and the highlands — plan a day or two to acclimatise before any effort.

Local cash is essential in markets and villages; cards work in cities. Argentine inflation moves prices fast.
