How to think about an Australia & Oceania trip

Australia is continent-sized — Sydney to Perth is as long as a flight to Europe. Pick one coast (the east: Sydney–Brisbane–the Great Barrier Reef, or the west/centre) rather than trying for all of it. New Zealand is more compact and perfect for a two-to-three-week road trip.

The flight is long (one stop at least) and expensive. Anyone who's already flown that far stays at least three weeks.

When to visit

Seasons are reversed. Their summer (December–February) is hot, peak season and prices; in northern Australia it's the wet season and stingers. Their spring and autumn (September–November, March–May) are the sweet spot.

New Zealand: summer for the hikes, winter for skiing on the South Island.

Visas and getting around

Australia needs an online authorisation (ETA / eVisitor) in advance — not a visa, but mandatory. New Zealand needs an NZeTA.

A rental car is close to essential outside the cities. Both countries drive on the left.
