Why public holidays reshape a trip
On a public holiday, banks and offices close, sometimes museums and sites too; public transport switches to a reduced timetable; and prices around long weekends jump. On the other hand — these are exactly the days you'll see parades, markets, fireworks and living tradition you won't meet on an ordinary day. The question isn't whether to travel on a holiday, it's knowing what to expect.
How we work out the dates
Dates are computed automatically for every country for the next three years, including moving feasts like Easter and Eid al-Fitr. Names are shown in the local language and in English. Customs themselves vary between regions of the same country — what's true in the capital isn't always true in the provinces.
