Cruise cabins — inside, oceanview, balcony or suite

The price gap between an inside cabin and a suite can be triple on the same sailing. The question isn't 'which is best' but 'how much time will you spend in the cabin' — and that depends on the itinerary.

The four types

TypeApprox. price premiumWho it's for
InsideBase priceA port-heavy itinerary, a tight budget, anyone who only sleeps in the cabin. Pitch dark — good for sleeping.
Oceanview+15–30%Wanting natural light and a sense of place without going outside. The window doesn't open.
Balcony+40–80%Sailings with continuous scenery (Alaska, fjords, Panama Canal), many sea days, morning coffee outdoors.
Suite+120–300%Wanting space, a separate living area, and perks: priority boarding, a butler, a dedicated restaurant, sometimes drinks included.

When a balcony is worth the gap

Worth it: Alaska, the Norwegian Fjords, the Panama Canal, New England in autumn, a transatlantic crossing — the view is always moving and you're aboard most of the day. Less worth it: the Mediterranean and the Greek Isles — a port every day, you're barely in the cabin in daylight, and the ship docks against an industrial quay at night. There, an inside or oceanview cabin saves hundreds without really giving anything up.

Where the cabin sits in the ship

Just as important as the type: mid-ship = the least motion (good for anyone prone to seasickness), close to the lifts. A low deck = less sway, but far from the pool. Avoid a cabin under the pool deck, the nightclub or the galley (noise and chairs dragging at 2am) and an 'obstructed view' cabin — a lifeboat blocks half the window.

Questions & answers

Answers to your questions

Is a balcony worth it on a Mediterranean cruise?
Usually less so — a port a day means you're barely in the cabin in daylight. In the Caribbean, Alaska and the fjords a balcony earns its keep.
What is an 'obstructed view' cabin?
An oceanview or balcony cabin where a lifeboat or equipment blocks part of the view. 10–20% cheaper; worth it if the view isn't critical to you.
