From the airport to the cruise port — how to get there in each city

The common mistake: assuming the cruise port is next to the airport. It almost never is. In several cities the distance is an hour or more, and the line sells an organised transfer that costs double a taxi. Here's how it works at the common departure ports.

The Mediterranean

Barcelona: BCN airport to the cruise port ~15–20 min, taxi ~€35, or the port's T2 bus + Cruise Bus. Rome: the cruise port is Civitavecchia, ~1h15 from FCO airport — train from Termini station (~80 min) or a private transfer ~€120. Don't plan a same-day fly-in without a buffer. Venice: VCE airport to the port ~20 min by water taxi or road. Athens (Piraeus): ~50 min from ATH airport, metro blue→red line or a taxi ~€55.

Florida & the Caribbean

Miami: MIA airport to PortMiami ~20 min, flat-rate taxi ~$27. Fort Lauderdale: FLL airport to Port Everglades ~10 min — the closest there is, taxi ~$15. Port Canaveral: ~45 min from Orlando MCO, no good public transport — a shuttle or a rental car. Galveston: ~1 hour from Houston (IAH/HOU), an organised shuttle.

Northern Europe & Haifa

Southampton: ~1h15 from Heathrow (LHR), train from London Waterloo (~80 min) or National Express coach. Copenhagen: CPH airport to Ocean Quay ~25 min, metro plus a short taxi. Haifa: the cruise terminal is in central Haifa, ~1h20 from Ben Gurion — Israel Railways to 'Haifa Center HaShmona' station (next to the passenger terminal) or a taxi. One of the easier airport-to-port hops anywhere.

The line's transfer vs a taxi

The cruise line's organised transfer usually costs 2–4 times a taxi for the same route, and its only real advantage is that if your flight is delayed, the line is responsible for getting you to the ship. If you fly in the day before and overnight in the city (always advisable — at least one night before a sailing), take a taxi or train; the line's transfer is unnecessary.

Questions & answers

Answers to your questions

How long from Rome's airport to the cruise port?
Rome's cruise port is Civitavecchia, about 1h15 from Fiumicino airport. Don't plan to land and board the same day without a safety buffer.
Should I buy the cruise line's airport transfer?
Only if you fly in on sailing day — then the line is responsible for you if the flight is delayed. If you arrive the day before, a taxi or train is far cheaper.
